The Masters Tournament
April 10 – 13, 2008

The Augusta National Invitation Tournament was born in 1934, the brainchild of Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts.  In 1939 it was remained The Masters Tournament and, being played in the first full week of April, it is the first Major championship of the year.

Played each year at the beautiful Augusta National Golf Club this tough and demanding Major, steeped in history and tradition, has produced some fantastic and thrilling winners throughout its history.

Past multiple Champions since 1934 are Horton Smith, Jimmy Demaret, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Ben Crenshaw, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Jose Maria Olazabal, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

This year, most money is going on – guess who? – yes, it’s Tiger Woods, with Phil Mickelson as a second favourite.  But what about the Europeans…It is a long time since the 5 winners in the 1980’s and 6 winners in the 90’s.  Surely, with Casey, Rose, Donald, Harrington, Poulter and Garcia, this year could be the breakthrough?

Well, sadly for them, it was not to be.

Leading from start to finish, the South African, Trevor Immelman conquered all!

With the first 3 rounds in the 60’s, Immelman could afford the luxury of a 75 in the final round to win by 3 shots.  But this was no final round collapse, he never looked troubled and indeed, with the wind troubling most players, there were only 4 sub par final rounds. The runner up?  None other than a certain Mr Woods!

Trevor was a worthy winner this year, in his 6th Masters appearance, the second South African to win this event.  Having won the 1998 US Amateur Public Links Championship, in the 1999 Masters Tournament, playing still as an amateur, he made the final cut.

Having been voted  a previous PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, his best Masters finish had been tied 5th in 2005.
